wondarchive › Glossary

Shelfmark, folio, leaf, verso, bundle

The words of the archive, defined the way the tool understands them.

Fonds
The whole body of documents produced or received by a person or an organisation. In wondarchive, a fonds is a repository — what you see under “My fonds” — and contains shelfmarks.
Repository
The archive service where you took your photographs: “Cologne”, “The National Archives”. The top level of filing.
Shelfmark
The reference for a unit of conservation — a box, a register, a volume — exactly as the archive service writes it. In wondarchive, a shelfmark is a folder within a repository; when the reference is printed at the foot of the page, the tool reads it and suggests it for the pages that follow.
Folio
The number of a leaf. In wondarchive, every page is assigned a folio at deposit, in the order the shots were taken, and never loses it, even if it moves to another shelfmark: that’s what makes it possible to cite.
Leaf
A sheet of the document, with its front and back. A photograph is usually one leaf, sometimes a double-page spread.
Verso
The back of a leaf. Often blank: the tool recognises it and doesn’t invent text for it.
Bundle
Leaves gathered without binding. Photographed leaf by leaf, in order.
Transcription
The text of the page, as written, in its own language. In wondarchive, produced by AI from the original, whether printed, typewritten or handwritten.
Record
What the tool notes while reading: the nature of the item, its date, dates it mentions, proper names, the printed reference. Marked “unchecked” until you have reviewed it.
OCR
Optical character recognition: the automatic reading of printed or typewritten text. In wondarchive, free transcription on your computer is OCR; transcription by AI goes further. The guide.
HTR
Handwritten Text Recognition: the automatic reading of handwriting, long done by models trained on one particular hand. The guide.
Extra-strength reread
The reading of a page by our most precise model: automatically on handwritten pages, on every page at maximum quality. The guide.
Fraktur
The Gothic printing typeface of German-speaking countries, in common use until 1941. Transcribed by wondarchive like any other print. The guide.
Kurrent
German cursive handwriting, in use until 1941: letters, registers, deeds. Read by the extra-strength reread. The guide.
Sütterlin
The simplified form of Kurrent, taught in German schools from 1915 to 1941. The guide.
Palaeography
The study of old handwriting: deciphering it, dating it, placing it.
Notarial minutes
All of a notary’s minutes, that is, the originals of the deeds they drew up, filed by date.
TEI
Text Encoding Initiative: the standard XML format for publishing and exchanging scholarly texts. In wondarchive, TEI export is in preparation.
IIIF
International Image Interoperability Framework: the standard for displaying and reusing the images of digital libraries, such as Gallica. In wondarchive, IIIF import is in preparation.
