The questions we’re asked

Short, and to the point.

Can handwriting be transcribed?

Yes. An extra-strength reread, with our most precise model, reads cursive writing in the common European languages and the Latin, Cyrillic and Greek alphabets. As with any transcription, check a proper name against the photo, which stays displayed next to the text. What it reads.

Which languages?

The European languages — German, French, English, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Latin, Russian and others — in the Latin, Cyrillic and Greek alphabets, are transcribed in their own language and translated into yours.

How long does it take?

From a few minutes to 24 hours: transcription and translation are queued and processed in batches. Once the upload is finished, you can close the tab; pages appear as they’re done.

How accurate is it?

Excellent on a sharp photo: on typewritten and printed text, mistakes are rare and mostly affect numbers and proper names; manuscript, read by an extra-strength reread, gives a high-quality text. A blurred or shadowed photo lowers accuracy. The free trial exists so you can judge on your own pages, not on ours. How to check.

Can I transcribe for free?

Yes: the free account transcribes and translates 100 pages with AI, kept for a year, with no bank card, and free transcription on your computer reads sharp print without using credits. The free options.

What happens to duplicates?

A fingerprint is computed in your browser before upload: a file already online isn’t sent again. Redepositing a whole folder after an interruption doesn’t create any duplicates.

What if I delete a page by mistake?

It goes to the bin, with its text and annotations, and is restored in one click within seven days. After that it’s erased — or immediately if you empty the bin. While it’s there, it still counts among your kept pages. Once erased, its text stays kept until your subscription’s renewal date: redeposit the same photo, and it finds its transcription and translation again without being counted twice.

Where are my images kept?

In France, at OVHcloud: originals in Paris, across three data centres, reading copies on a server in France. Your data.

Can I leave with my data?

Yes, at any time, free of charge, in open formats: originals, copies, texts, translations, metadata. It’s written into the terms of sale.

Do I need to install anything?

No. A recent browser is enough; straightening pages happens inside it, no extension needed.

How do credits work?

A transcribed page costs 2 credits, 3 with translation; at maximum quality, 10, or 11 with translation. Each plan brings its credits every year and keeps everything already transcribed and searchable, up to its page limit; unused credits carry over as long as the subscription is renewed. Essential: €39.99 incl. VAT, 5,000 credits, 10,000 pages kept; Standard: €69.99 incl. VAT, 10,000 credits, 20,000 pages; Expert: €99.99 incl. VAT, 20,000 credits, 40,000 pages.

What if I have more pages than my plan?

You add credits in packs, with no expiry date: 5,000 for €24.99 incl. VAT, up to 80,000 for €264.99 incl. VAT. To keep more pages than your plan allows, the storage extension costs €10 incl. VAT a year per 10,000 pages. Your renewal date doesn’t move; the simulator tells you which offer to take.

Do I need to be a student to take Essential?

No. It’s the plan for a first fonds — 5,000 credits a year, enough to transcribe up to 2,500 pages, 10,000 pages kept — and nobody will ask you for a student card. Beyond that, it’s Standard or Expert.

How are my pages counted?

A deposited photo is a page, whether it shows one page or an open book, and it counts from the moment it’s deposited; its transcription and translation are included. Duplicates are set aside at deposit. A page deleted within the 7 days after it was deposited, before being transcribed, is cancelled: it doesn’t count. Deposit the whole box, set aside covers, blank versos and failed shots, then start transcription. After that, or once transcribed, emptying it from the bin gives back a quarter of a page to your plan. A photo over 10 MB counts as two pages of space (15 MB at most), and the upload tells you so.

How do I pay?

By bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay; a lab or a funded project can also pay by bank transfer. Every payment comes with an invoice, which you download from your Account page. Pricing questions.

Can I share my collections?

Yes: an individual licence lets you invite up to 4 people as readers, who read, search and export without changing anything. To upload as a group, you need a Laboratory or a Funded project.

In a lab, who uses up the pages?

Each paid account brings the team 40,000 pages and 80,000 credits a year. A member whose account the team pays for uses their share, set by the lead; team collections use what hasn’t been handed out. A Funded project works the same way, with unlimited members. The details.

I already have a plan and I’m joining a team?

If the team pays for your account, your plan is frozen: days, credits and packs are set aside, and come back to you as they were when you leave. The details.

VAT?

Prices are shown inclusive of all taxes, Laboratory (€300 incl. VAT per account per year) and Funded project (from €990 incl. VAT) included: VAT does not apply (art. 293 B of the French tax code). A lab or an institution receives an invoice for the same amount.
