The text’s date, not the file’s
The EXIF date or file name only say when the photo was taken, sometimes years later; wondarchive looks for the date named in the document itself.
An estimated date, flagged as such
Without an explicit date, one can be estimated on reading; it stays editable and never overwrites a date you entered yourself.
A doubtful date, flagged
A date too far from the rest of the shelfmark’s is flagged doubtful, to confirm with one action rather than accepted unchecked.
What lets you date a document
- A printed letterhead with a year or a dated place
- A handwritten note, a stamp or a registration mark
- An event or law mentioned in the text
- The document’s place in the order of a register or bundle
- A file reference including a year
- The style of handwriting or print, as a last resort

Where does the date shown on a page with no written date come from?
It’s estimated on reading from the document’s content when possible, otherwise the page stays undated rather than receiving an invented one.
Can an estimated date be wrong?
Yes, which is why it stays editable at any time, and a date too far from the rest of the shelfmark’s is flagged doubtful.
Can a date I correct myself be overwritten?
No: a date entered by hand is never replaced by a machine date.
Does the photo’s date (EXIF) count for the document’s date?
No, it only serves the order the shots were taken in; the document’s date comes from what’s written in it.
