Finding a name, a date, a word, across ten thousand pages

A word, a proper name with its spellings, two terms a certain distance apart, or a date even when imprecise: search covers the whole fonds. It sits to the left of the reader, like a navigation panel, and results stay visible while you read.

full text

By fragment, across the whole fonds

“Projektions” finds “Projektionsapparat”. Search is cumulative: every term added narrows it down, and you choose the scope — the page, the shelfmark, the whole repository.

at a distance

Two words in the same sentence

“Goerz” near “Berlin”, within fifty characters: proximity is checked against the text itself, not estimated. That’s what tells a mention apart from a coincidence.

proper names

Indexed, with their spellings

“Barsy, A. v.” and “A. v. Barsy” are the same person; an OCR typo or a missing umlaut are matched and offered to you for merging — never merged automatically. “Pages about X” answers instantly.

dates

Understood, even when imprecise

The item’s date and dates it mentions are recorded as written. “1925” and “24 March 1925” become comparable: an imprecise date is treated as a range.

shelfmarks

Read at the foot of the page

When the volume’s reference is printed on the page, it is read and suggested for the pages that follow. What you enter yourself always takes precedence.
